Sumi-e ink painting

The Japanese term 'sumi-e' is made up of 'sumi', meaning black Chinese ink, and 'e', meaning painting or path. It is both a monochrome painting technique and a form of meditation. It originated in Chinese calligraphy, then was imported to Japan. Already a thousand years ago, Chinese writers attributed a therapeutic role to painting, treating it as entertainment, a kind of escape from everyday life. They sought sources of joy in playing with brush and ink.

With a simple brush, ink and rice paper, we focus our attention on the present moment. We let go of thoughts and eliminate body tensions through good posture and correct breathing.
